Last night I went to see Peter Saville’s lecture in the Logan hall for D&AD.
I went there begrudging a man who’s name carries so much distinction and celebrity in the industry via the
frivolous and inconsequential medium of music sleevework. However, I left with a whole new impression. The man’s a genius. I don’t think i’ve ever seen someone so articulate and measured at explaining themselves. If only everyone was like that there would never be any confusion. He was humble enough to admit the triviality of album artwork, choosing instead to focus on the power of communication and his tug of war between (what he referred to as) communicative design and fine art. What also struck me was his contemporary nous – his opinions on design tutors / lecturers and his views on the current art market holding particular distinction. He’s a man very much still casting his influence on the world today.
He also looked totally badass. I just hope I can look like that when i’m 54.
